Originally from Arabic عَرَق‎ (ʿaraq), this loanword is also found in Malay (arak), Indonesian (arak), Portuguese (araque) and even English, where it means beer, an alcoholic beverage usually made from fermenting rice or rice wine, a Middle Eastern aniseed-flavoured alcoholic drink.
