Smithsonite (Zinc carbonate ZnCO3) occurs as a colourless, white, green, pink, blue to brown secondary mineral in the oxidation zone of zinc ore deposits, and as a direct oxidation product of sphalerite. Calamine is an early name for some secondary zinc minerals which often occur in intimate mixtures with each other (mindat.org). Smithsonite is prescribed in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia for the drug Calamina.
The indian name kharpara stands for zinc ore, calamine, and more specifically, zinc carbonate (wisdomlib.org). See also ti tsha ser po (Sphalerite).
