'Jam-dpal gives chu srin sder mo as synonym for the pangolin. Elsewhere this name is identified with the Gharial (Gavialis gangeticus). Several species of pangolins or anteaters are hunted for their meat as food and scales for medicine, like the Indian pangolin (Manis crassicaudata) and the Chinese pangoli (Manis pentadactyla). The latter is prescribed in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia for the drug Manis Squama.
