The Tibetan fox is an endemic of the Tibetan Plateau up to 5300 m. It is small and compact with a conspicuous head form. It lives in excavated dens or burrows under rocks or in crevices of boulder piles. There is a large industry in the higher areas of Tibet and Nepal for the fox’s fur, which is usually made into hats.
Red foxes are found throughout much of the northern hemisphere from the Arctic circle to Central America, the steppes of central Asia, and northern Africa. This species has the widest distribution of any canid and are found from sea level to 4500 meters elevation (animaldiversity.org).
