Vehicle (theg pa)
- When the Buddhist teachings are classified according to their power, they are described as a vehicle (Skt. yāna) or a series of vehicles, which are arranged hierarchically in the manner of the rungs of a ladder. The term "vehicle" suggests a dynamic momentum leading to the attainment of nirvāṇa. Although from one standpoint there may be as many vehicles as there are thoughts arising in the mind, the tendency to classify the teachings into diverse vehicles has prevailed. Accordingly, the expression "two vehicles" refers to the distinction between the Lesser Vehicle (Skt. Hīnayāna) and the Greater Vehicle (Skt. Mahāyāna), the exprerssion "three vehicles" or "three causal vehicles" refers to the vehicles of pious attendants, hermit buddhas and bodhisattvas. The division into "nine vehicles", which corresponds to the rNying-ma classicfication, includes the three causal vehicles of pious attendants, hermit buddhas and bodhisattvas, and the six resultant vehicles. The latter comprise the three outer classes of tantraa, also known as vehicles of austere awareness, viz: Kriyātantra (bya ba'i rgyud kyi theg pa), Ubhayatantra (gnyis ka'i rgyud kyi theg pa), and Yogatantra (rnal 'byor gyi rgyud kyi theg pa); and the three inner classes of tantra, also known as vehicles of overpowering means, viz: Mahāyoga (rnal 'byor chen po'i theg pa), Anuyoga (rjes su rnal 'byor gyi theg pa), and Atiyoga (shin tu rnal 'byor gyi theg pa).
