The Shel gong shel phreng distinguishes 3 main types according to size, with 2 subtypes according to colours for each main type. The large type is divided in white and yellow : zhim thig dkar po grows in rich soils, has large white flowers, a quadrangular stalk, dark green, rough leaves. The black seeds are triangular, similar to buckwheat. zhim thig ser po has light yellow flowers and black seeds. The leaves, arranges in whorls in each node of the stem, have the form of nettle-leaves. The medium type is divided into red and blue : zhim tig dmar po is similar to the yellow type, but has red flowers. zhim tig sngon po grows in the shade of lower altitudes (2-3000m), has purplish-blue flowers with brown sepals, stalks of 30-40 cm and dark, soft leaves. It's odour reminds go snyod (Caraway). The small type is divided in white and blue : zhim thig dkar po is a short plant of dry regions, has dark green leaves and produces numerous white flowers and dark seeds similar to sesame seeds. zhim tig sngon po is similar to the previous type, but has blue flowers. Other authors have different categories and names which correspond only partially. The majority of the plants mentioned in the literature are of the Lamiaceae family, but in Gammermann's russian dictionary one finds also a number of Geranium spp (Kletter 2001).
