Short Biography
The 7TH Gyalwang Drukchen Thrinley Shingta (1718-1766), was one of a trio of the extraordinary Sarma patriarchs of that era, along with Gyalwa Karmapa, and Tai Situ Rinpoche of the Karma Kagyud lineage. He mastered all the Shangpa Kagyud teachings and was extremely active in assuring the preservation and promulgation of both the Nyingma and Sarma traditions. Thrinley Shingta wrote six volumes of philosophical commentaries and precise meditation instructions, and established many monasteries. As counselor to the king of Nepal, in 1758, he was responsible for finishing the reconstruction of the Swayambhu Stupa, which had been begun by Kathog Rigdzin Tsewang Norbu who had passed away before completion. The Gyalwang Drukchen worked in collaboration with the Pawo Tsuglag Gawa Rinpoche (1738-1803) after due permission had been obtained from King Jaya Prakash Malla of Kathmandu (ruled 1735-1768) and King Prithvi Narayan Shah of Gorkha (ruled 1743-1755). He also restored the stupas at Boudhanath, and Namo Buddha. At Swayambhunath, there is a memorial stone slab describing the meritorious deeds of Kathog Rigdzin Tsewang Norbu and Thrinley Shingta.
