dGa' ba'i rDo rje pictures the black and white variety under gzi rnying, and the brown one under gzi dmar. The images (n°039) and (n°040) show more or less opaque stones. He identifies the latter as ‘Red agate sardonyx’, a name which he also applies to ma na ho dmar po, a type of the translucent agate mchong. The images (n°041) mchong, and (n°042) ma na ho dmar po, picture translucent, partly transparent agates. On mindat.org, Sardonyx is depicted as an opaque mineral, but the chinese name given on the website is the same as for the translucent ma na ho dmar po in dGa' ba'i rDo rje.
Onyx is a black and white variety of Agate (a silicate), refering to a usually black and white banded variety of agate, or sometimes a monochromatic agate with dark and light parallel bands (brown and white for example) - but traditionally the name was reserved for black and white banded agate, and brown varieties are named Sardonyx. The traditional method to make onyx is reported to have involved soaking the stone for months in honey or some sugar-rich solution, and then into concentrated sulphuric acid, which turned the sugar-infused bands black.
