Along with the commentary by Rongzom Chokyi Zangpo, this commentary on the Guhyagarbha Tantra by Longchenpa is considered to be the most important Tibetan work on the subject. Longchenpa discusses this tantra from a Dzogchen perspective. In contrast, Lochen Dharmshri wrote two commentaries on the same topic taking a Mahayoga approach. Mipham wrote a condensation of Longchenpa's work entitled Osel Nyingpo.

Other important commentaries were written by Dodrup Tenpey Nyima and the Indian masters Vimalamitra and Buddhaguhya.
