1. Platycladus orientalis (L.) Franco (Cupressaceae) Eastern thuja, Chinese arbor-vitae (Dawa 2009, Wangyal 2020)
2. Cupressus gigantea W.C.Cheng & L.K.Fu (Cupressaceae) Tibetan cypress (Wangyal 2020)
3. Cupressus torulosa D.Don ex Lamb. (Cupressaceae) Himalayan cypress (Boesi 2005 Baragaon)
4. Juniperus indica Bertol. (Cupressaceae) Himalayan black juniper (Dawa 2009, Boesi 2005 Baragaon). Young, this plant is spiny and thus considered shug tsher. Adult, the leafs are soft, and the plant is considered rgya shug.

Here in the context of the fruit chapter, the identified rgya shug plants indicate cypress species. Juniper berries come from spa 'brum, prostrate junipers. Later in the leaf chapter, shug pa tsher can, or shug tsher, applies mainly to junipers.

shug pa is a general term for members of the Cypress family, including species from Juniperus, Cupressus and Platycladus. Types are defined according to morphology, environment and fragrance. shug pa are upright, spa ma are flat and high altitude plants. Within shug pa, shug tsher are thorny (like young Juniperus indica) and rgya shug are smooth (lha shug, Cupressus torulosa, and lug shug, old Juniperus indica). Within spa ma are those with and without thorns, spa ma tsher ma can (Juniperus squamata) and spa ma tsher ma med pa (Juniperus communis, prostrate in high altitude) (Boesi 2005).
shug pa has 2 types : the smooth lug shug and the spiny ra shug. lug shug again is divided in 3 forms. The tall de ba da ru is resinous and has scented yellow roots and stems, used for incence making. The medium shug pa khro zhel grows near rivers and bears spike-flowers that arise amidst pendant leaves resembling Yak's tail. The smaller form grows in open forest like other shug pa and bears fruit similar to Pinus sp. (Dawa 2009)
The sanskrit name Devadāru refers to the Himalayan cedar or Deodar, Cedrus deodara (Roxb. ex D.Don) G.Don, common from Afghanistan to the Himalayas and Tibet. It is identified with thang shing.
