(med) In the medical context rlung is one of the 3 nyes pa. It is the most subtle of the 3, and also the foremost reason for sickness. The 'bum bzhi of the Bon says "The miraculous wind makes whatever there is in the world, there is nothing which arises from something else. That's why rlung is the cause which stirs up all sicknesses.". It is rlung which is considered to pass on from one life to another as the physical base of the ’I‘ consciousness. Within the body, it is predominantly present in each and every component of the body, but it resides primarily in the heart, brain, nerves and blood vessels. This energy governs the functioning of the central nervous system, which involves subtle perception of various objects of consciousness. It is also responsible for all the functions of the mind and body that involves movements.
There are five specific types of rlung, each with specific locations and functions :
rlung srog 'dzin - life sustaining rlung (crown of the head, water element)
rlung gyen gyu - ascending rlung (chest, fire element)
rlung khyab byed - pervading rlung (heart, space element)
rlung me mnyam - fire accompanying rlung (stomach, air element)
rlung thur sel - descending rlung (genital area, earth element)
