"Perfection", despite being the most common English rendering, is quite flawed. These are in facts ongoing, unperfected practices of the Bodhisattvas. The core meaning is 'transcendent(-al)', as these are not the ordinary kinds of generosity, patience and so on, but rather those practices which have been made 'transcendental' by way of Bodhicitta and the view of Emptiness.
