kon pa gab skyes is the pho (male) variety of sen ge 'jig me (one of the seven kinds of drug that heal wounds). Its flowers are dom-dom (ornamental tassel of red hair tied to the neck of Yak in Tibet) shaped and the leaves change into woolly mass as of spra ba (Anaphalis leaves used in moxibustion) when rubbed. It has two varieties. The one growing on meadows with dark green thick leaves is the pho (male) variety called kon pa gab chung and the other which grows in lower areas with big, long, membranous and lobed leaves is the mo (female) variety called gab chen (Dawa 1999).
Saussurea is a large (over 400 species) and very divers genus in the Asteraceae family. It is divided in 4 subgenera with distinct morphological features, which are affiliated with certain tibetan names. Subgenus Eryogone or 'Snowball plants' (bya rgod sug pa) has dense hairy flower heads, subgenus Amphilaena or 'Snow lotus' (gza' bdud mgo dgu) has bracts which close over the flowers, creating a greenhouse effect. The other subgenera have open, scabious-like flowerheads. Saw worts are with kon pa gab skyes and rtsa mkhris, others are included in khyung sder, spang rtsi do bo or bya rog nyungs ma.
